Create a map of upcoming construction projects
This would be useful for residents who may be inconvenienced, as well as those who are wondering when their street will be repaved.

App for Buying Local
Sometimes I need to buy something that I haven't looked for in the past, I have to stop at multiple stores before I find it. It's easy just to go on Amazon and have it mailed, but if it were possible to know where to shop, I could get it here in Honolulu.
This could either use crowd-sourced or store inventory information, and would be especially useful for those small businesses that I wouldn't normally go to.

Honolulu City Council Connect
Create a mobile app that makes it easier for constituents to connect with their council members. The app could include the following features: find and contact your council member (via zip code), upcoming hearings, public events in my district, votes, and etc. As an example, Sunlight Foundation provides a similar app for congress.

Adopt a Wireless Node.
Kokua Wireless has deployed free municipal wifi hot zones throughout Oahu. The nodes are used by businesses to share their internet and provide free wifi. It creates a mesh. We need to solicit "techies in the various neighborhoods to adopt these nodes (like adopting a street) to ensure that they stay activated.

Build a multi-modal trip routing web application and phone app, including approx. time and cost of the trip.
Build an web application and phone app that will let people route a trip using any or multiple modes of transportation, including the approximate time to complete the trip, distances by each mode/for the complete trip, and approximate cost for each mode/the complete trip. The routing needs to be mode sensitive, i.e. a suggested route by bicycle should be the most convenient and safe route. The app should also tell you exactly where to catch the bus (i.e. which side of the street the bus stop is located) and which direction and route to walk to get to the bus…

Provide the ESRI maps that the City has and continues to develop. Provide the ESRI API's that they have developed.
Developers could them develop MASHUP apps. Example: A map that shows all road closures, reason for the road closure and impact such as bus re-route or trash pick up. This way the private sector and various government agencie and NGO's like the electric company can coordinate efforts for a one time only road closure.
Mashup Crime data with other mapping data such as where the overt surveylance cameras are located.7 votes -
Break through the bureaucracy. Pass an ordinance to require city departments to provide data through APIs.
My fear is that we will all spend our valuable time coming up with incredible ideas and then not have access to the data we need on a timely basis. I've been through this before at the city in multiple departments, There are many ways to hold back public data. I propose we work through defined channels to get an ordinance passed that requires city departments to provide data through APIs that we can then be used to serve and inform the public. There are several issues to be addressed, including costs, budgets, privacy, timeframes, etc., but we can come…
