Break through the bureaucracy. Pass an ordinance to require city departments to provide data through APIs.
My fear is that we will all spend our valuable time coming up with incredible ideas and then not have access to the data we need on a timely basis. I've been through this before at the city in multiple departments, There are many ways to hold back public data. I propose we work through defined channels to get an ordinance passed that requires city departments to provide data through APIs that we can then be used to serve and inform the public. There are several issues to be addressed, including costs, budgets, privacy, timeframes, etc., but we can come… more

A mobile app for bus routes
It will display closest bus route, wait times, and routes. Integrate google maps and alarm when the bus you need to take is about to arrive. Similiar to San Francisco apps http://www.routesy.com/ or iBart.

Create a map of upcoming construction projects
This would be useful for residents who may be inconvenienced, as well as those who are wondering when their street will be repaved.

Devise a policy whereby all Honolulu websites are constructed atop a standard platform
Anyone should be able to build an app that can access any data on any Honolulu web site. The most effective and accurate way to do this is to agree on a set of standards whereby any future website must be built atop a platform whose data/api is available to all. Existing websites would be re-built on a schedule commensurate with their current importance/relevance in the community.

Honolulu City Council Connect
Create a mobile app that makes it easier for constituents to connect with their council members. The app could include the following features: find and contact your council member (via zip code), upcoming hearings, public events in my district, votes, and etc. As an example, Sunlight Foundation provides a similar app for congress.

Provide the ESRI maps that the City has and continues to develop. Provide the ESRI API's that they have developed.
Developers could them develop MASHUP apps. Example: A map that shows all road closures, reason for the road closure and impact such as bus re-route or trash pick up. This way the private sector and various government agencie and NGO's like the electric company can coordinate efforts for a one time only road closure.
Mashup Crime data with other mapping data such as where the overt surveylance cameras are located.7 votes -

We live in one of the most beautiful cities on earth, with great weather year-round. Eating outdoors would enhance the quality of our lives!

Adopt a Wireless Node.
Kokua Wireless has deployed free municipal wifi hot zones throughout Oahu. The nodes are used by businesses to share their internet and provide free wifi. It creates a mesh. We need to solicit "techies in the various neighborhoods to adopt these nodes (like adopting a street) to ensure that they stay activated.

Plant trees that provide fruit (for any person to harvest) all around the city
Example: papaya, mango, avocado, ulu etc. Citizens could get involved by being a "sponsor' of a tree. When actual people are connected to a tree, they feel a sense of ownership and pride {note: the planting of fruit trees is my cousin Kealoha's idea, not mine. I simply expanded it and am passing it on}

Inventory the trees on Oahu and convert to a locator app.
It would be nice to be able to look at the tree canopy of Honolulu and know what type of trees there are. Perhaps do the inventory and allow the community to use Google Earth to view.
